Politics vs Inheritance
Would you rather discuss your political views with your family than talk about inheritance?
Discussing inheritance with your family can be a very tricky topic. So much so that research has shown that 66% of British people haven’t done it at all.
Apparently, men find inheritance even more difficult to talk about than women - with 47% of men avoiding the topic, compared to 40% of women.
In fact 38% of people said that they would rather discuss politics than start a discussion about inheritance!
This lack of openness is leaving around 4 in 10 people feeling clueless about what they will get when their parents pass away.
Now whilst you might consider that it’s not a topic for family discussion, and that whatever your children get is a bonus, experts are warning that failing to plan and talk about the subject could lead to inheritance disputes down the line.
Nearly a quarter of people surveyed said that they had already argued with family members about inheritance at least once.
It might be the children who don’t want to discuss the subject either, because they firmly believe that their parents should be enjoying their money without worrying about leaving it to them. But with increasingly high numbers of blended families, where one or both parties have children from previous marriages, it means that failing to acknowledge the position could result in bitter disputes later on.
