Grant of Probate

Application only

If you would like us to assist with the application for the Grant of Probate only, our fees would be dependent on the complexity of the estate, but will be based on our hourly rate of £290 per hour plus VAT at 20% (£348 per hour including VAT).

What we will do.

Simple estate

If the estate is simple and only a brief report of the value of the assets (IHT205) needs to be submitted, our fees start at £800 plus VAT at 20% (£960 including VAT).

Complex estate

If the estate is more complex and Inheritance Tax may be payable, or extra allowances must be claimed to avoid Inheritance Tax being payable, our fees start from £1,350 plus VAT at 20% (£1,620 including VAT).

In addition, the Probate Registry fee on submitting the application is £273.

Additional copies of the Grant can be requested at a cost of £1.50 each.

When acting for you to obtain the grant, we will:

Explain the contents of the Will or how the Intestacy rules apply.
Identify the executor or personal representative and explain what can happen if that person does not wish to act.
Establish the information required to complete the application.
Complete the relevant HMRC and Probate Registry forms.
Submit the application to the Probate Registry.
Check the grant when it is issued and passing it to the Executors so they can administer the estate.

What's not included

  • Advice about any claims made against the estate
  • The administration of any Trusts created under the Will
  • Deeds of Variation
  • Business or farming advice if applicable

Please be aware that the fees shown above may be higher if the matter is more complex than expected, or if you require additional advice about other issues relating to the administration.

In these cases we will charge you at the hourly rate of the person dealing with the matter (£290 plus VAT at 20% or £348 including VAT), but this will always be discussed with you before any charge is made, and you will be given an estimate of the costs involved.

How long will it take?

This is dependent upon the time taken to obtain the information required to make the application and how long the Probate Registry is taking to deal with applications. We will write to all the companies with whom the deceased had accounts and the time taken for them to reply can vary.

We would advise you of the likely timescale at the time of taking your instructions. In our experience it can take around 16-20 weeks to obtain the grant on a simple estate.
